Storage at the core of the energy system.

We design, install and manage utility-scale BESS systems for industry. Solar PV is a lever — storage is the direction.

About us

Storage specialists. Not a solar EPC.

STILCA Energy is an Italian company focused on BESS energy storage systems for industrial and utility-scale applications.

We operate with a precise approach: we design and build solutions where storage is the centre of the energy system, while solar PV is an integrated component when it supports the company's energy autonomy.

We are not a solar EPC. We are a storage specialist.

Origin

Thirty years of plants, turned into a vision on storage.

STILCA Energy is born from its founder's experience in plant automation and industrial solar PV. Over the years, plants for several megawatts of power have been developed and managed.

To this is added a unique heritage in solar inverter service and maintenance, built through the activity of STI Repair, active since 1997.

This experience led to a clear awareness: today the real value is not just producing energy, but managing it, storing it and making it available when needed.

Vision

Governing energy, not just producing it.

We believe the future of energy is not only about production, but about the ability to govern it intelligently. Storage systems today are the turning point: they allow available energy to be transformed into controllable, schedulable and strategic energy.

That is why our direction is clear: storage as the centre, solar PV as the lever, autonomy as the goal.

Energy becomes truly useful when you can decide when to use it.

What we do

A complete service, from design to maintenance.

We offer a complete service for BESS systems, covering all project phases. When needed, we integrate solar PV plants to complete the energy system.

Analysis and quoting. Technical surveys. Engineering. Installation. Commissioning. Operations. Maintenance. Repair.

Every phase is handled in-house, without outsourcing the critical steps.

Approach

Why storage before solar PV.

Today many companies start from solar PV and add storage afterwards. We follow the opposite path.

We start from a more important question: how should the client's energy system actually work? Only afterwards do we define whether solar PV is needed, how much it should produce and how it should integrate with the storage system.

We don't design plants. We design energy systems.

BESS

Industrial systems to make energy available when it matters.

A BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) is an electrochemical storage system that stores electrical energy in lithium-ion batteries to make it available when it is truly needed.

In the utility-scale configuration, we are not talking about residential batteries, but about industrial storage systems designed for production, plant and infrastructure applications, from hundreds of kWh up to tens of MWh.

They enable peak shaving (power peak reduction), energy time shifting, increased solar self-consumption, blackout backup and participation in grid services delivered to the TSO.

How it works

Four phases, one coordinated system.

1. Energy is produced or drawn from the grid or from a solar PV plant.

2. The BESS system stores it when it is technically or economically convenient.

3. Energy is released when needed to cover peaks, support loads or improve continuity.

4. The control system governs everything, balancing production, storage and consumption.

Reputation

Technology changes. Those who manage it remain.

In today's energy world, the real risk is not the technology itself. It is its durability over time. Systems evolve rapidly. Manufacturers change, transform, and in some cases disappear.

For this reason, real security for an investor lies not only in what is installed, but in who is able to manage it over time. That is where the value of STILCA Energy is born.

We don't just sell technology. We bring a reputation built in the field.

Lifecycle

An approach built for continuity, not just commissioning.

STILCA Energy was born with a clear goal: not to stop at design and installation. Our model includes operations and routine maintenance handled directly by STILCA Energy.

With access to specialist expertise in advanced maintenance and power electronics repair, we offer the client a broader vision, focused on operational continuity over time.

Design → Installation → Commissioning → O&M → Advanced support.

Why us

Five reasons built over time.

Real specialisation in storage. Storage is not a side activity. It's our focus.

Concrete field experience. We come from years of activity on plants and energy technologies.

Continuity culture. We design with management, maintenance and durability already in mind.

Independent approach. We don't sell a product. We design the best solution.

Technical reputation. Those who choose us don't just buy a system, they rely on skills built over time.

The value of a plant is measured over time. That's what we work for.

Solar PV

Solar PV: a lever, not the starting point.

Solar PV is a fundamental component in building energy autonomy. STILCA Energy has gained concrete experience in building large-scale plants.

Today, however, our approach is different: solar PV is not the starting point, but one of the levers to be integrated within a system led by storage.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about BESS systems.

Answers to the most common questions on energy storage systems, utility-scale BESS, design and maintenance.

What is a BESS (Battery Energy Storage System)?

A BESS (Battery Energy Storage System) is an electrochemical storage system that stores electrical energy in batteries, typically lithium-ion (LFP/LiFePO4), to make it available when needed.

It is composed of battery packs, PCS (Power Conversion System), BMS (Battery Management System), EMS (Energy Management System), plus cooling and safety systems.

What is the difference between a utility-scale BESS and a residential one?

A utility-scale BESS is a large industrial system, typically from hundreds of kWh up to tens of MWh, designed for production plants, energy investors and infrastructure applications.

It differs from residential systems (5–20 kWh) in terms of power, architecture, integration with the medium-voltage grid and the grid services it can deliver to the TSO.

What benefits does a BESS bring to an industrial company?

The main benefits are:

Peak shaving — reduction of drawn power peaks and related costs in the bill.
Energy time shifting — buying during off-peak hours and using during peak hours.
Solar self-consumption — increase in the share of solar energy actually used.
Backup — operational continuity in case of blackout.
Grid services — ability to provide regulation to the TSO and earn related revenues.

Is it better to install solar PV first or BESS first?

The STILCA Energy approach starts from how the company's energy system needs to work, not from solar PV. We first analyse consumption, critical loads and autonomy goals, then we size the BESS and define whether and how much PV to integrate.

This avoids plants oversized on production but undersized on management.

How much space is needed to install an industrial BESS?

It depends on the capacity. For systems up to 1 MWh, indoor air-cooled cabinets are used (sizes from 50 to 200 kWh each).

For larger sizes, outdoor containerised solutions are adopted: as a reference, a 1 MWh BESS occupies around 60–80 m² including auxiliary systems.

What is the lifespan of a BESS system?

An industrial BESS has a typical useful life of 10–15 years. Actual duration depends on battery chemistry (LFP offers over 6,000 charge/discharge cycles), depth of discharge, thermal conditions and maintenance quality.

Proper O&M management significantly extends the operating life of the system.

Is a permit needed to install a BESS?

Yes. The Italian regulatory framework defines different regimes based on power and location:

BESS up to 10 MW fall under free building rules. Those located within industrial sites follow the Simplified Authorisation Procedure (PAS). Larger plants require Single Authorisation at regional or provincial level.

STILCA Energy manages the entire technical-authorisation process.

What is the payback time of a BESS investment?

The payback of an industrial BESS is typically between 3 and 6 years, depending on the services activated (peak shaving, energy arbitrage, interruptibility, participation in grid markets) and the company's consumption profile.

A preliminary feasibility analysis allows the return for the specific case to be estimated precisely.

What does the STILCA Energy maintenance service include?

The STILCA Energy O&M service includes scheduled preventive maintenance, corrective maintenance in case of failure, continuous remote monitoring, firmware and control software updates, and thermographic inspections.

Thanks to the experience of STI Repair, active since 1997, specialist interventions on power electronics are carried out, including component-level repair.
